Hey everybody. My name is Derek Schmidt. I’m the founder and CEO of DesignLoud and Swell Systems. Today. I’m gonna read some common questions around marketing.
ARE MARKETING AND ADVERTISING THE SAME THING?
No, marketing is essentially what you do anytime you’re out in the community are on a networking event, passing your name, your passing your business card out, whatever the case is, that’s marketing. Advertising is when you’re paying for your name to be out there. So that could be Google ads, direct mail.
Maybe you’ve got some brochures that you put up at the local barbershop, whatever the case is that is advertising. So it’s important to understand the difference between the two. Marketing is not the same thing as advertising.
ARE MARKETING JOBS IN DEMAND?
Absolutely. Think about what COVID did for the economy. More and more businesses went online. They went virtual and more and more people are growing up in technology, more and more people are getting a degree and some sort of marketing, it’s not going anywhere.
You see what’s going on now with the metaverse and everything. It’s only gonna continue to excel and grow. So there’s a huge opportunity to break in as a marketing professional.
CAN MARKETING SAVE THE PLANET?
It depends if you’re marketing a business that is green, recycles, or some kind of cool thing, like electric vehicles, for example. Yeah, it technically could.
CAN MARKETING MAKE YOU RICH?
Yes. Just like selling, you know, when you’re out there, you’re selling your new customers and you get a lot of new customers, marketing can absolutely make you rich. It can help your business grow exponentially.
WILL MARKETING JOBS BE AUTOMATED?
I think this is first off a very important question because I think as technology evolves and look how fast it’s evolved in like the last 10 years, I think there will be more and more things that can be automated, but I don’t think you will ever truly take out the human element out of marketing.
You have content writers now that are completely based on machine learning and algorithms, right. I can knock out a blog post fully written by a robot and artificial intelligence, right. But it still requires a human to go in and proofread that content.
So as good as it may sound, I don’t think there’s ever be a 100% automated way for marketing.
HOW HAS MARKETING CHANGED?
That’s another great question. I think over the last decade, maybe even more, it’s more about providing value to your clients and your customers, right? It’s what I’m doing right now. It’s less about the car salesman approach and no offense if you’re a car salesman or you’re in that industry, but again, it’s more about providing as much value as you can to your potential customers so that they trust and like you, okay, you hear this all over the web, this isn’t new information, but adding that value can go a long way in closing that sale later on how marketing and sales work together.
Just as I said, you know, you’re at a networking event and you’re mingling or meeting some new people you’re essentially out there marketing your business, right? Well, as you start to add value and people start to like you and you, it’s gonna make it so much easier to close a sale later on.
Additionally, the more you can keep your name kind of top of mind with these people, the more they’re gonna think of you when the opportunity comes for you to provide that level of value to somebody they work with or them themselves.
WHICH MARKETING STRATEGY IS MOST EFFECTIVE?
So of course this is gonna depend a lot on the business, what you’re selling, what your services are. But if you’re familiar with a funnel, a good acronym for it, TOFU, MOFU, BOFU, right? Top of funnel, middle of funnel, and bottom of funnel. You have to understand where advertising and marketing fit into each stage of that funnel.
So you’ve got the top to funnel. This could be direct sales. This could be blog posts. It could be videos like I’m doing right now, right? The goal is, is provide value.
I wanna move you further down in the funnel, in full transparency, I hope you subscribe to our newsletter, follow us on social media, whatever the case is. I hope I move you further down in that funnel. And then eventually you’re gonna get to the bottom, which is where I close hopefully close the sale.
So, which marketing strategy is most effective? I think it’s gonna depend on the type of business you are, but a good rule of thumb is if you’re creating content for your blog or videos, whatever it is, you drive those people to your website. I hope you have some sort of social media pixel or Google tag, whatever the case is so that you can then show them remarketing ads that lead them further and further down your fund.
WHY MARKETING IS IMPORTANT?
So there’s a saying, whoever has the most eyeballs or the most present whoever’s name is most well known, gets the business, right? There’s another one. I think it’s seven to 11 touches to a sale. The more opportunity you have to get your business in front of people, the more you’re gonna have people knocking down your door when it comes to them, looking to purchase, whatever it is you’re selling.
So I think that’s important as far as marketing goes. Because again, it’s, it’s not just middle and bottom of the funnel. It’s also top of funnel trying to have your business name and your products, your services, your value in as many places as possible.
WILL MARKETING BECOME OBSOLETE?
Absolutely not. I think more and more, it’s important for you to establish yourself as an authority. You have to think you’re marketing your business. You wanna solve somebody’s problem, right? What value can you add to their life? Give them the end result, you know, paint the picture of what life could be like if they work with you.
So I don’t think marketing at all will be obsolete.
WHEN IS MARKETING RESEARCH, UNNECESSARY?
Never! For you to understand and, and connect with your ideal customer. Again, you have to know what kind of problems they’re having. You’re creating content around what kind of problems they’re having. Hopefully solve it for them, without them ever even contacting you. And then it’s gonna be easier to move them down, down your funnel, close a sale.
If you’re creating content that’s valuable and you’re bringing people into your funnel, they’re gonna like, and trust you. It’s gonna make it a lot easier to close a sale.
